Tomorrow morning, October 25th, here in Iowa, hunters and their four legged friends will be taking to the field in search for what is being considered the scarcely populated upland bird, the pheasant.
Forecast for success by officials still has a positive outlook for those who put in a lot of time in their hunt. Presently, we are in a cycle where large groups are not apart of the landscape.
Standing crops in fields may provide barriers to what could already be a challenge for the first day.
Opinions heard from an avid resident hunter supported hunting as usual. He was going to take his dog out for some exercise with his friends to see if they could find a few of the Ring - necked Roosters.
As for me this season - I only plan to listen for activity and observe. The general consensus of our immediate area is a serious shortage.
The Iowa season runs from October 25, 2008 - January 10, 2009.

Pheasant Opener

The pheasant numbers are definitely not what they once were.
I do wish we still had a good bird dog every now and then. The only problem is that it interferes with my deer season.
Simply Outdoors - The winters in our areas have been long and cold the last few years.
Then our springs have had a lot of rain with flooding prime nesting.
Wish we could get some of the North and South Dakota pheasant populations again in Iowa.
I wouldn't have a problem with splitting the season. Especially if I was successful with either one at their openings. ;)
I sincerely miss my days of hunting pheasant...it's what I grew up doing, really. The first animal I ever actively hunted - I lived in prime country in Eastern Oregon...when in HS, my family moved to Idaho - still plenty of birds, but we no longer had a ton of land of our own to hunt and I just slowly began to stop hunting them. Now, sadly, it has been probably 6 or 7 years since I last went pheasant hunting. Must correct that error this winter.
Tom Sorenson - I do hope you are able to get out to hunt that upland bird. It is good to get back to things you used to do and remember so fondly.
