The deer have been populating open areas to feed. They are hungry and continue to search for food at all hours of the day now.
Timber floors still being covered with layers of snow, takes the deer out where the sun has opened ground in the thawing spells of last weekend.
These deer are only a sampling of what I saw and what has been seen.
Notice all the young ones...that number continues to grow because of the capability of 6 month old does to conceive and become mothers. I continue to see a very small deer,which I assume was born at the end of last summer, running with the herd.
Too much attention sent them off to look just over the fence for somewhere else to enjoy a nibble...

The deer are really starting to herd up around here too. It's too bad that we don't have any open patches to speak of, though. Hopefully the thaw we are suppose to get this weekend, and next, helps with that a little.
To be truthful, I'm looking forward to it too.

I must agree about being able to see the brown grass again.
Not to rain on the positive thoughts. We are supposed to get rain , even thunderstorms soon. It might even bring us more snow.
I will enjoy what time we have without frozen,white surfaces.
My husband would love to see that out our back yard. We hardly see deer here in the city.

That's awesome they did venture way out from the cover of trees. It is good to know they are being allowed to repopulate.
We got lots of relitives in IA,MN,WI,& ND, so have been hearing of the tough winter there. If you do get a little earlier spring it would be nice to give the deer herds a break. Our mule deer herds have never rebounded since our killer of a winter in '92'. Enjoyed the pics.
Gary - Thanks for stopping by. Since the pictures were taken we have had one huge melting event. This was the first night I haven't seen the deer moving out of the timber to eat in a very long time.
We are due for some more snow, but at least we had a few days for all the roving creatures to get a different perspective. ;)
Elk do the same on the winter range here. Maybe next week I'll take a day off from skiing and get some pics to post. Looks like your w/ts might be exceeding the carrying capacity--as Gary says that happens then comes a big die-off. W/ts are pretty quick to recover, though, compared with mulies or elk.

see the elk banded together in a picture.
The w/ts around here have gone through some pretty tough winters since 2000, still the numbers continue to grow.
They aren't going to have to worry about big snows any more this season.I hope;)
